Guadalest, close to Benidorm!

Guadalest … The name sounds romantic! In reality it is a small village with less than two hundred habitants and is situated just 25 km inland from the town of Benidorm.

It is a major tourist attraction having been declared a ‘Monument of Historica land Artistic Value’ in 1974. It charms over 2 million visitors every year and is a truly spectacular sight – the remains of a medieval castle and village precariously perches on top of a mountain overlooking a reservoir.

The main reason to visit this lovely village is because of the unique location of the original village, which is looks like a crow’s nest in the mountains and can only be reached through a tunnel in the rocks, which has been carved through the solid rock.

There are numerous interesting museums to visit as well as the castle ruins, all of them with a low entrance fee.  From the city you have a spectacular view of the mountains and the slightly lower reservoir of Guadalest. At the reservoir you can take a boat trip with the Barco Solar, a fully solar-powered boat. The journey takes 50 minutes and it’s possible to do this every days, except Saturday. The tour starts every hour from 11 a.m. and the last tour is at 18.00 p.m.
(from October to March at 16.00 p.m.).

On busy days it can be very busy at the end of the morning with parked cars. Besides that, it is due to the heat to come earlier in the morning (in summer).  Around 10.00 a.m. this village comes to life. For beautiful photos it’s better to return at the end of the day as in the evening because of a warm, red-into-orange glow about Guadalest and the valley.

You can capture the reservoir all day because it’s in the north of the village.  So travel back in time with a visit to this lovely little village and enjoy its stunning mountain scenery, nice craft shops, a lot of interesting museums and local restaurants.

From Benidorm there is a direct connection by bus to Guadalest. This bus leaves only once a day from Benidorm.
